Healthy Living 1200

Healthy Living 1200 is a broad-based, multi-disciplinary curriculum that encourages students to take responsibility for their lives by acting conscientiously in the present and by establishing positive health practices that support and enhance lifelong health.
Healthy Living 1200 provides opportunities for students to examine and reflect on issues that affect their health and well-being.

The four units are:
Active Living, Healthy Eating, Controlling Substances, and Personal Dynamics.

Several Key Components of Healthy Living 1200 include:
Participate in physical activity, Examine health indicators and health practices, Investigate relevant health topics, Explore activities that improve life skills and enhance capability to positively affect health and well-being, Develop a Personal Strategic Health Plan, and It is recommended that 30 - 45 % of class time be allocated to physical activity.

Evaluation:

Tests and Quizzes----------40%          
ü  There will be formal tests and quizzes periodically throughout the year.

Assignments Portfolio ----------20%                          
ü  This will include:  case studies, assignments, essays, checklists, etc.
ü  All of this work must be kept in order in a binder, duo tang or folder.  This portfolio will be assessed periodically for content and evaluated every term.

Physical Activity----------30%            
ü  30% of class time will be devoted to physical activity (3 out of 10 classes).
ü  This mark will come from participation, and assignments based on integrating physical activity into a healthy lifestyle.

Presentations----------10% 
ü  After each major topic students are required to make a presentation to the class detailing an outcome.  This presentation can be done individually or in pairs; but each member must spend equal time presenting.

    There are Lots of Ways to Get Physical! Please read the list of ways to get physical on page 88, “67 Ways to Get Physical.” Select any TWO that interest you.     Congratulations you have been hired by the Canadian Health and Stroke Foundation. Your first task is to create a brochure or audio ad promoting the benefits of an active lifestyle. This assignment will be graded on content, but also your creative presentation of the facts we have explored thus far. Good luck and have fun!

    This assignment should be well developed, and take about an hour to complete.

    Hint: If you are making a brochure, Microsoft has great templates to use! (Also, these brochures will be shared with other students in the school).

    Read the article, “Keeping Fit in the Cold,” in your text on page 66-67. Then answer the following questions; place your answers in your assignment portfolio, not your exercise:

    1) Whatever the activity, exercising in the cold has health risks. Two of the most important and commonly seen injuries are what? If you are going to be active and enjoy the outdoors when it is cold, you need to understand these conditions and know how to prevent them.

    Congratulations! You have been hired by Bonne Santé Café, to create an ordering menu. On this menu you are required to:

    1) Describe 10 healthy meal options your café provides (indicate ingredients, serving size, preparation, etc).
    2) Describe 5 healthy dessert options your café provides (indicate ingredients, serving size, preparation, etc).
    3) Describe 5 drink options your café provides (indicate ingredients, serving size, preparation, etc).

    Next to each meal/dessert/drink you must indicate why it is a healthy choice (food group/nutrients), and then include a price and picture to add a creative touch. Don’t forget your café logo!

    Read page 45 of your student text then answer the following questions:

    1) List 5 healthy snacks that you would highly recommend.

    Dieting the Right Way; The Lifelong Way!

    After reading the “Dieting” article on page 50 write 150-200 word summary for the term. Explain using at least five supported points about how an individual can “diet” in an healthy way. Please be careful… Do not get confused with “going on a diet” and “having a healthy diet that supports lifelong good health.” Go with the later. Your summary of a diet should be something that is easily obtainable, not support a weight loss goal.

    Recipe File!

    Read the Articles “free + vice FOOD FAQ” and “Recipe File” on pages 52-53 in your student text. Select TWO meals and TWO desserts that you would consider healthy. These can be personal recipes, researched, and/or adapted from existing recipes to take on a more healthy presence.

    Things to include in/with your recipes:
    - A short summary outlining why the choice is a healthy one or healthy alternative (use the ideas on page 52 to guide you).
    - Name your recipes…the more creative the better! (Mega-Munch Muffins!)
    - Ingredients/toppings.
    - Detailed mixing/baking/preparation procedure.
    - Photo if possible.

    Issues with Food

    As we near the end of Unit Two: Eating Healthy; you will be required to write a research based essay. You are encouraged to use scholarly sources when supporting your ideas. Even though this is a research assignment I expect to see your own voice developed throughout the paper. This assignment will be valued under the quizzes section. You can select ONE topic to write about from the following list:

    1) Choose one problem in society that contributes to the complex concept of widespread hunger or famine. You can describe it and suggest possible solutions.

    2) The consequences of food insecurity in my province, Canada and the world.

    This essay must be written following these criteria:
    A) Cover page
    B) Size 12 font (Times New Roman); double spaced
    C) 2 pages in length (not including cover page)
    D) Be aware of grammar, and use proper paragraphing: introduction/body/conclusion.
